company, sickness and easter

sadly, this blog title describes my weekend. travis' brother troy and his wife carrie, and their kids, janel (6), aly and payton (turned 5 while they were here) and mr. alek (2) made the long, long drive down from kimberly, idaho, on wednesday. travis and troy left early thursday morning and flew to cali to watch some ncaa games at the honda center in anaheim. so that left 2 moms and 6 kids to have fun together!! :)

first of all, i have a word to say about cameras. recently quite a few people i know have shelled out some cash and bought NICE cameras and lenses. good for them. i read their blogs, know they've taken classes, are experimenting, learning all their new toys' features, etc. this is what i have to say, i want no part of it!! travis took my canon elf (it really does fit in my pocket) to california with him and left me with my large canon power shot g6 7.1 mega pixel camera and it was the biggest pain in my arse. apparently, though i would love to deny any wrongdoing, it was on the wrong setting and the majority of photos were either grossly over or under exposed. whatever the large M means, thats the crappy setting it was stuck on until i came out of the haze and noticed it wasn't on auto. anyway, i lamented the loss of my elf THE ENTIRE TIME! i take it everywhere, it has no setting options really so nothing to mess with there and it serves me dang well! when i want professional quality photos, i will call the professional (insert plug for stacishaw.com) but my everyday point and click makes me very, very happy. i will stop ranting now and commence with my easter weekend re-cap.

here is the "entertain yourselves while i am making dinner waiting for them to drive here" project. guess who ended up doing the most coloring. me. but it was fun and the kids loved seeing it when they drove up. welcome!

thursday, the girls played princesses while mason was at school. marissa ditched school partly because cousins were here, mostly because she was still asleep at 8:30 and school starts at 9. hence the girl time when it should have been preschool time.

thursday we went to the ivins park, came home, had naps, went out to chilis (applause, applause that we and chilis both survived without incident) and hit the outlets for some power shopping. everyone played so nicely together. carrie's girls have to take turns sitting by marissa for breakfast, lunch and dinner because they all want to so badly. isn't that sweet? and marissa, of course, eats up the attention and being one of the big girls. i do have to brag a bit and say i was very proud of her for playing so well, there wasn't one who was neglected or made to feel unwanted.

which brings to my other child. mason. i love him but my patience wears painfully thin sometimes. he bullied alek like no other. he screamed at everyone several times a day and hit, scratched, pushed and tackled like he was vying for the ultimate fighting championship. now i know he was 1) overstimulated, that was a lot people adding to his world, 2) missing his daddy. he is a daddy's boy 3) not feeling well and 4) testing boundaries with new people/mom.
but it makes you feel about a centimeter high as parent when no less than 3 moms at the swimming pool tell you your child pushed their child down the slide.
but look at this face, he was SO HAPPY!!!! i think he went down the frog slide no less than a 100 times in the almost 2 hours we were there. and in his defense, i don't think he was being mean. i think he was thinking, this slide is so great, why are you standing there, here i'll help you make up your mind and then i can go too! what a kid.

friday it was aly and payton's 5th birthday and they wanted to go swimming. so we went swimming and came home to find the birthday fairy had been here and left her mark with balloons, streamers, princess tierra's for the birthday girls to wear, lei necklaces, birthday presents! we had little caesars pizza, breadsticks and rootbeer before we all crashed for the night.
miss janel was such a great helper. is this what all 6 year olds are like? because i am looking forward to it immensely.
aly was a trooper too. she is carrie's strong willed child. funny, both of us have difficult children and they are both one of our twins. we discussed this at length and think it is an attention/control issue. these individuals require 200% of our attention and get a fraction of that and desperately want to control their world. we do love them and are glad they are in our family.

here is a favorite new face of hers. some sort of sassy pucker? i love her swimsuit cover-up. no towel needed and it preserves modesty to and from the pool. i bought it in a size 6 so hopefully it last next year too.
our easter bunny came saturday morning. everyone got a new basket with a coloring book, crayons and bubbles. we were all about simplifying this year.

mr. mason is in his jammies because he got sick friday night. ahhh, yes, fun friday night. i had been up since 2am, fighting a headache and trying to breathe through all the mucus in my head. anyway, i heard him start to cry and like a flash i was downstairs. i picked him, he vomited on my shirt, we hauled to the bathroom, he finished the job in there and then up to my room where he slept on the mattress on the floor we have reserved for occasions such as this. he was scalding hot and poor baby slept like a log. can i sing praises to motrin? because i want to. he was at least able to semi-function with that wonder drug in his system. no need to watch the clock because he got insta-grumpy/burning up the minute it was time to have the next dose. good thing the throwing up only lasted on saturday. the fever has been on again/off again since then. and marissa already had this last week.

super fun times, my husband is gone, i feel like a steaming pile of manure, i can't take any decent meds because they are contraband and i have people staying in my house. but, i love my sister-in-law more than life itself because she was the most empathetic, understanding, supportive and helpful company EVER!!! i love carrie!
bunny cake, a morris tradition that we have carried over to the jackman house. my kids love it. its a boxed cake mix and tinted coconut, how fancy is that? :) at least the frosting is homemade.
miss payton. i think she and marissa look quite a bit alike at times.
who can stop shoveling cake in her mouth long enough to smile? not this one!

alek with his cheesy camera smile. what a sweet little boy!
aly like my hootenannie pancakes, she can come and stay anytime!
i love this picture of janel, she looks so grown up!

the company left on monday morning, we had a good time despite it all. the sickness is now mostly over in our family. my head cold has shrunk from a category 5 hurricane to a small tropical storm, much easier to deal with. and easter was fun despite not dying eggs this year. we had all the stuff, it just didn't materialize. and we didn't go to church sunday. i feel badly about that, but i couldn't take sick kids in good conscience.

news

so what's new with me? lets see. i got a new cell phone, its pink. i switched to brown mascara, read a great book called "in walks love" and what else? oh yeah, i'm pregnant. :)

Q: how far along are you?
A: 19 weeks

Q: how many babies are in there this time?
A: just one, i promise! i've had 3 ultrasounds

Q: why have you had 3 ultrasounds?
A: i have a subchorionic hemorrhage.

Q: what the h*** is that?
A:completely ripped from the amazingpregnancy.com website: "Subchorionic Hemorrhage is bleeding behind the placenta, often caused by a clot. In most cases, this clot will dissolve away, resolving the problem and allowing the pregnancy to progress normally." i had ultrasounds to monitor the baby and watch the hemorrhage. the baby is fine. the hemorrhage is basically a non-issue at this point in my pregnancy. it was a bigger deal 12-14 weeks.

Q: are you having a boy or a girl?
A: ask me after thursday, that's when my next ultrasound is. :)

Q: why did you keep it a secret for so long?
A: because i like secrets. :) actually, for a number of reasons. first of all, i'm really not the type of gal who pees on the home pregnancy test and a minute later tells the world. that's fine and dandy for those who are that way, but it is not for me. secondly, it helps the time go by faster. the later other people know, the shorter amount of time is left. and thirdly, i have a hard time getting and staying pregnant so we have learned not to share news until we are FOR CERTAIN there is something positive to share.

Q: what is your due date?
A: august 17th

Q: are you looking forward to a long, hot summer?
A: all i can say is thank goodness it will be flip flop season because i HATE bending over to put socks and shoes on

Q: any cravings?
A: all things salty and meaty. as gross as that sounds, i know. i want big breakfasts with bacon, eggs and hashbrowns. anything i can put salt on. my body obviously wants protein and iron. ice cream, cookies and other sweets still taste good, but really don't hold the appeal for me right now. i can't remember the last time i made cookies and that is saying something. i remember the last time i had a ham sandwich and that was lunch. :)

Q: how has this pregnancy differed from m and m's?
A: with the twins, i was sicker than a dog until 16 weeks, throwing up 10 or more times a day. it was awful. this pregnancy, not once. i'm not holding my breath, since i am a puker by nature and chances are i will throw up between now and august whether or not it is pregnancy related.

Q: what symptoms do you feel?
A: insomnia. vivid bizarre dreams every night. i even get the weird dreams when i nap. i am up to pee in the middle of the night. my nose is now the super sniffer.

Q: have you felt the baby move?
A: yes, but it not the type "strong-kicks-that-other-people-can-feel" yet. just little movements for now

Q: do you have to have a c-section again?
A: i hope not but it won't be the end of the world if i do. my dr has already discussed this with me. i am an ideal candidate (his exact words) to try a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean ). since my reason for having to have a c-section in the first place was situational, (ie marissa was breech and they were not head down and heads close together which were the requirements for me to be allowed to try a vaginal delivery) my dr will let me labor and make sure my labor is progressing well, monitor the baby's heart rate and we'll see how that goes. i am not allowed to go "pioneer" style, meaning drug free. i have to have an epidural (if i have to, i have to, wink wink) so that at least there is something in me should the need arise for an emergency c-section. the big worry with vbacs and the reason so many ob's are paranoid about them, is the risk of uterine rupture and subsequent fetal death. sounds ominous but my risks are low and we're going to give it a shot.

Q: what do your kids think about this?
A: marissa is hilarious. she kisses my belly and tells the baby good morning. she tells me she can't help put the crib together, she's too little. (no one has asked her help and i haven't even started to put together anything) mason tickles my belly and says tickle, tickle baby. i bought them a book called, "hello baby" about a boy whose mom is going to have a baby, and what it will be like when mommy goes to the hospital, and what is like when the baby is born and comes home. they are enthralled with the book.

Q: how fat are you?
A: to quote my daughter, "mommy, your belly is big." great and i'm half way there. i already in maternity clothes and have put on 20 lbs this pregnancy so far. there its out, i have no dignity left.

i hope that about sums it up. more updates to follow. we are very, very happy and excited!!!

A night to remember

cindy, andrea and myself, all ready for a fun evening out on the town. well, a night out in leeds anyway.
cindy and andrea vamping for the camera
brian and kim, neighbors and friends. happy birthday to kim on the 18th. ;)
enjoying the atmosphere
the birthday couple

bob and robyn, notice her stylish new green coat. isn't it babe?
jen and dallin. they came here for dallin's work christmas party and said it was terrific then too
douglas and staci, left the little tykes with g'ma and g'pa shaw. nice to have family in town
mike and maryann, alone at the end of the table. we communicated through sign language most of the night since they were so far away

i'm weird, i know. yes, i took a picture of my dinner. i mean, hello, the presentation was bee-yoo-ti-ful! the tomato rosette, come on, give it up for chef imi and his staff at the cosmopolitan. so here is my take on dinner. the bread was warm and soft and perfect, (that's for maryann) and the appetizers consisted of caribbean shrimp on a bed of seaweed, calamari fritters with dipping sauce and caprese (which is slices of tomato and mozzarella drizzled with balsamic vinegar). loved them all. travis is a calamari fan and he thoroughly enjoyed his seafood treat. for my entree i ordered the filet mignon (what choice did i have?) and it was very good. a 9 out of 10. robyn and i discussed this a bit at the restaurant and then travis and i discussed it at home as well. despite my natural tendency to like all things gourmet, i have realized that i am a purist at heart. let me explain. my filet mignon came smothered in a burgundy sauce, the filet itself had a gargonzola (sp?) cheese crusting on, topped. by sautéed mushrooms. it was fine, the meat was cooked to my specifications, the filet tasted incredible, but to be honest, i could have lived without the fancy shmacy toppers. hence, the realization i am a purist. i just want my beef. cook it right, a few seasonings and voila, a masterpiece. it doesn't need anything else. that is my philosophy.

a little smoke from the candles, there were only 6, don't be alarmed
the delectable confectionary creation that was our "gift" (for the money we spent that night, they should give us the cake for free!) from the staff. someone in our group who shall remain nameless but lets say it rhymes with racy straw, said it looked like a costco cake. well, it didn't taste like a costco cake and that is all i care about. :) it was everything a chocolate cake should be, rich, moist and oozing with filling.
the chef insisted we do the "work" and cut our own pieces. i let travis cut for the safety of all involved.

our gracious and amazing chef/host for the evening, chef imi. he is from hungary and despite his thick european accent, we enjoyed the little chats he would have with us periodically throughout the evening. he made us feel special and taken care of. everyone sang happy birthday to us as he brought the cake out. to be there with all our friends made it the most memorable birthday i've had in ages. thanks to call for coming with us!!! and those who couldn't make it, we missed you.

Happy Birthday to us

for our birthday, we decided to head to out to snow canyon state park, practically in our back yard, and have a picnic. we picked up some subway sandwiches and went out to enjoy some sunshine.
these are my friends cindy and andrea from pocatello. they drove down thursday and left this morning. it was SO GREAT to have them come down, it made my birthday extra special. :) we have been friends since we were 14 and in 9th grade at franklin junior high. we have survived acne, braces, bad haircuts, boy drama, prom, drivers ed and all the other "joys" of our teenage years together. who can't be friends with someone who knew you when you 14 AND still likes you today?
mason soaking up some rays. good thing he has he uber cool shades. ;0)
some of the fantastic scenery that surrounds us, i wish i could fix the color so it isn't so washed out because this photo doesn't do the vibrant red mountains justice.
again, more of God's handiwork here in southern utah
daddy and his boy
poser rock
great view
andrea and cindy
the tres amigas

mase and dad looking oh so cool
hooray! i did it!!
aunt cindy and daddy were the brave fools, i mean brave souls who climbed higher with the kids. i stayed on more sure footing and used my zoom button.
birthday cake time. travis's request every year is a dairy queen ice cream cake. it is not my cake and it doesn't even say my name on it. it says "happy birthday daddy." i have one piece and then the rest is all his to consume at his leisure. so once it has been turned over to him, he doesn't even cut it into slices, he just gets his fork out. oh well, it is his birthday. :)

present time! the kids got me some knew j.a.henkle knives, a rolling pin and a magnetic wooden block for the afore mentioned knives. very nice choices kids!! they gave daddy a new polo shirt and a new book by grisham, (something about pizza in the title, the one about the american football player in italy) and yes, nicole, that is a maternity shirt i'm sporting. :) more to come on that subject later, i promise. ;)

Leap Back to the 80's

last night we were went to a "totally 80's" party that was billed as "so big it only happens once every 4 years!" it did not disappoint. here are a lot of photos of the evening, i am so impressed with everyone's dedication to 80's fashion detail. not a side ponytail was out of place and the bangs were big and beautiful. travis came late and straight from work, so he was not in costume.

heidi with kristy, our hostess for the evening. one room was karioke with 80's songs, the backyard had tons of chairs, tables, and portable fire pits and a huge projector screen playing ferris buehler's day off. the garage was transformed into the dancing area, complete with disco ball and dj corner. thanks for the invite kristy!!
sara, yours truly, christy, lisa and jen. lookin' good ladies, lookin' good. i hope christy doesn't lynch me for posting this group shot. i was threatened not to post the one of just her in her rad hammer pants. those of you who are interested, i will host a private viewing at a later date. :)

travis, bryce, steve and dallin doing a little NKTOB, that's new kids on the block for those who don't know. they had the right stuff last night baby. ;)

crowd shoot, love bobi's crimped hair
tara and michelle. i would attend any function, anytime, anywhere for the promise of michelle's stuffed mushrooms. i recognize her pan and salivate as i fill my plate with an embarassing amount of the delectable fungi.

sam and sherrie. she was channeling madonna. its funny, they were telling me that their kids were all like, you wore that to high school in the 80's? and they were like, no not actually. sam said he never wore a pink shirt once in the 80's and sherri said she never wore anything like that either.

this one's for you heidi and tom!! i absolutely love the total 80's facial hair tom is sporting. rock on bro. and heidi's hair is simply inspiring. what can i say?

the mullet triplets. they did some pretty sweet karioke to metallica and G and R

jen, striking a pose, an 80's pose at that. love the leg-warmers.

jen, kelly and denise. ready for a night out of the town, ready to groove to the latest cindy lauper single.

i'm mainly posting this of sara because when she saw it on my camera she said she hated the face she was making. i, on the other hand, think its a great face/pose. that's why i'm posting it. :) that and her amazing hair.
risque alert!!! kevin (our host) doing his rather skin-tastic impression of tom cruise from risky business. he actually has short black shorts under the white shirt, but i still had to double take every time he walked by. he is a maniac.

drew, melissa and andrea. too bad i don't have a shot of andrea's shoes. they were awesome and she admitted they hurt her feet so badly she couldn't wait to take them off at home. the price we pay for beauty.
